Our Story

Hi!  My name is Colleen. I am the owner of Grand Traverse Mushrooms.  I work with local gourmet mushroom farmers, selecting only the finest gourmet mushrooms, and distribute to over 35 restaurants, personal chefs, farmer's markets, and individuals in our area all year long.   Grand Traverse Mushrooms is located in Traverse City, Michigan and services Grand Traverse County, Benzie County, Leelanau County, Antrim County, and Charlevoix County in Northern Michigan. 

The business was started as a farm back in 2012 growing oysters and shiitake mushrooms.  I had never had these types of mushrooms before and remember being awestruck at the oyster mushrooms beauty when I first saw them.   I am also a professional photographer, so when it was harvest time, I found myself taking so many photos!  I enjoyed harvesting, selling, and delivering (and taking photos!) while my partner and sister-in law did all of the farming.  In 2020, unforeseen circumstances caused us to not be able to farm anymore.  I absolutely loved working with the chefs and enjoyed my role as sales manager and delivery driver, so I decided to seek out other mushroom farmers in the area willing to work with us to keep the business going. I found an Amish farmer in Bretheren who was on the edge of not growing mushrooms anymore, so it became the perfect match.  I worked with him making sure he was growing the quality of mushrooms that needed to be grown for our customers and it has become a great partnership.  It eased his burdens and allowed him to focus more on growing than selling and his business began to thrive along with mine.  Since then, I have added another quality grower to the mix with an unending knowledge of mushrooms and a drive to grow the most delicious and beautiful gourmet mushrooms in Northern Michigan.  Because of this new farmer, we are now are able to offer 6 different varieties of gourmet mushrooms to our area all year long!  Most products are delivered right to our customers door, however, we have also begun selling at a booth at the Kingsley Farmers Market in the summer and fall.  We have added dried mushrooms*, mushroom powders*, and other specialty mushroom products* and would love to see you at the market!  When you buy from Grand Traverse Mushrooms you are helping to support four local families (which include 13 children!).  If you are a restaurant chef or owner and want to put our mushrooms on your menu or use for a special or if you are an individual who is interested in adding mushrooms to your diet, please hit the call or text button.  I look forward to hearing from you and seeing your lovely face this year!
